🔥 When I think of climate change, what comes to mind is burning landscapes and images of polar bears stranded on ice. Activists and scientists have been painting a 𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 as important evidence FOR change. But... 😵💫 ...the picture is so grim fight or flight mode kicks in for most of us: "This seems SO bad it must be false or hopeless. Why should I do anything?". ➡️ We need to paint a 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 of 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘊𝘈𝘕 𝘣𝘦 using: 😍 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀, 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: taking climate action can seem like giving up things we love (e.g. steak, a bargain on Temu!). We need to help people positively see themselves on the other side of change. 〰️ I loved the Chobani video that showed a future where nature, technology, and humans progress together (solar punk is rad): https://lnkd.in/gpZtaB2K 〰️ Check out what Vow is doing to reshape food culture. The future isn't a worse version of today, it's brilliant and different! 〰️ Join an experience with Glimpse 〰️ Check out companies that can save you money, give you a BETTER product, and help the planet - like baresop. and Who Gives A Crap 💪 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆: according to the theory of Motivating Change humans need evidence OF change in order to make change. This increases the sense that THEY can take action. 〰️ Follow people like Sam Bentley who showcases positive changes that are 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 〰️ Participate in development opportunities like WorkforClimate 🏆 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: we humans love being rewarded for actions we take! Everyone points to government for carrots/sticks, but we gotta stop waiting around and... 〰️ Celebrate the friend who bikes everywhere 〰️ Applaud the family that gets presents 2nd-hand 〰️ Cheer on the teammate who eats meat every other week ↗️ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀: the scale of climate change is paralyzing. But if we believe actions begets action, let's stop making excuses and trust in the process. 〰️ It's powerful when 1 member of a community takes an action and invites a friend to do the same - "I changed my investments to oil-free", "I ride my bike 3 days/week", "I eat meat 1x/week" 〰️ There are great apps like Earth Hero and companies like Treely helping companies take measurable action -------- I'm Lauren 👋 I co-founded The Mintable and Tandem, and built and led high-performing teams at companies like Brightwheel and Gusto. 🙊 Monkeys are better at adapting to change than humans...which means that climate action will only be led through exceptional leadership. I'm a fan of the 4P model for change management - Purpose, Picture, Plan, Part. I've previously reviewed how we can motivate climate action through a compelling Purpose and inspiring Picture. Now we need a good ✅ PLAN. Given the scale of climate change, global ambitions and agreements are important. BUT it's also important to activate action at a hyperlocal, community level. 🤔 Why? Because that's where the vast majority of humans can take steps and gain immediate benefit. As long as the solution feels like someone else's, we'll all stay on the sidelines. Here are examples of climate leaders with a PLAN: 〰️ The Lycée Concordia empower student and parent groups to build plans for their communities. 〰️ Parents for Climate gives you clear plans and actions locally when you join ( https://lnkd.in/g5nTjFDq ). 〰️ Earth Hero gives your family bite-sized goals to achieve to improve your footprint. 〰️ WorkforClimate gives you a plan to activate action within your company. 〰️ Terra.do helps you build a personal plan for impacting climate. Happy National Recycling Day! The National Recycling Coalition (NRC) chose November 15th as National Recycling Day to promote sustainability and recycling in the United States. It has been a celebrated day since 1994. One of the most important things you can do for the environment is to simply consume less, but in some instances recycling is an excellent alternative. This day serves as a reminder to get involved and raise awareness of recycling.
