Kevin Cunnane is an experienced Engineering Manager at Stripe, where he leads the Risk Experience team. He is currently focused on hiring engineers to tackle tough Risk challenges for Stripe's diverse users. Kevin's primary responsibility is to build full-stack tools that enable the Global Risk Management team to identify and prevent malicious activity in the financial ecosystem. He is a highly cross-functional leader, making changes across Stripe's user-facing and internal systems. Before joining Stripe, Kevin worked at Microsoft as a Principal Software Engineering Manager and Senior Software Engineering Manager. In his role as a Principal Software Engineering Manager, he delivered new tooling experiences for Azure Data, with a focus on relational data and big data. He built up a new team with a focus on designing and implementing experiences for all new SQL Server releases, including SQL Server 2019 Big Data Cluster. He also built the first Microsoft Notebook user interface, with compatibility for Jupyter and native SQL notebooks. Kevin was the point person for partner teams and 3rd party extenders of Azure Data Studio. As a Senior Software Engineering Manager at Microsoft, Kevin was responsible for building a new Azure Data cross-platform tools stack, including Azure Data Studio and the MSSQL for Visual Studio Code extension, which has over 2.5 million installs. He led these from day 1 of development through GA. These apps are built on top of a modern stack: Electron, Node.js, and Angular5 is used for the UI application with support for micro-service backends (.Net Core, Python, and more). Kevin holds a BA, BAI in Computer Engineering and Mathematics from Trinity College Dublin and an MSc in Software Engineering from Dublin City University. He has over 16 years of relevant experience and is highly proficient in Senior Software Engineering, SQL, Azure, Big Data, Jupyter, HDFS, Spark, Kubernetes, Javascript, MSSQL, Microservices, ui, NodeJS, and Python. Kevin is comfortable leading new projects from the very start through GA and onwards to successful growth and adoption phases. He enjoys growing new teams, collaborating with partners, and architecting clean, powerful products whose experiences and APIs lead to customer and team success.
