Three rules every HR team uses.
Add each job
End date − start date for every role, counting both months. Jan 2022 → Jun 2024 = 2 yrs 6 mos
Count overlaps once
Freelance work during a full-time job adds no extra time. Merged, not summed
Convert for forms
Months ÷ 12 → decimal. 4 yrs 3 mos = 4.25 years

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my total work experience?
Add up the time between each job's start and end date, counting overlapping periods only once. The calculator does this automatically and shows years + months.
How do I write experience in decimal, like 3.5 years?
Divide the months by 12 and add to the years. 3 years 6 months = 3 + 6/12 = 3.5 years. 2 years 9 months = 2.75 years. The result above shows both formats.
Do internships count as work experience?
Many companies count paid, full-time internships. Part-time and academic internships are usually listed separately. Use the 'Internship' checkbox to see your total with and without them.
What if two of my jobs overlapped?
Overlapping months are counted once, so a freelance gig during a full-time job doesn't inflate your total. We flag any overlaps.
Should I mention career gaps?
Be upfront. A short line on your resume (e.g. 'Career break: upskilling') works better than hiding it. We show gaps longer than 2 months so you can prepare.
What experience should I enter in job applications?
Enter total relevant experience as of today, in years and months, or decimal if the form asks. Fresher = under 1 year.
