AI engineer has become the most talked-about job title in Indian tech, and the pay reflects it. Companies that were experimenting with chatbots two years ago now have whole teams building AI features into their products, and they are competing hard for the same small pool of people.
Here is what AI engineers actually earn in 2026, why the range is so wide, and which skills put you at the top of it.

AI Engineer salary by experience
AI engineering pays a premium over general software and data roles at every stage. These ranges are total compensation for engineers building AI into products:
- Fresher (0–1 year): ₹8–14 LPA (₹6–12 LPA for general ML roles)
- Early career (2–4 years): ₹22–38 LPA
- Mid-level (5–7 years): ₹38–65 LPA
- Senior (8–11 years): ₹65 LPA–₹1.2 Cr
- Staff / principal (12+ years): ₹1.1–1.8 Cr at top product companies and GCCs
Two honest caveats. First, the top of these ranges comes from product companies and GCCs, where stock is a big part of pay. Second, many people with "AI engineer" titles at services firms earn ₹7–12 LPA, which is why Glassdoor's overall average (about ₹12 LPA) looks much lower than what you hear on LinkedIn.

What hiring managers screen for in AI engineer interviews:

- LLM tooling: prompt design, RAG pipelines, vector databases, agent frameworks and evaluation.
- ML fundamentals: you should be able to explain how a model is trained and why it fails.

CTC vs in-hand: what you actually take home
Offer letters quote CTC, but your bank account sees something smaller. Take an AI engineer offer of ₹12 LPA with no variable pay. If PF is calculated on a basic of 50% of CTC, your monthly in-hand is roughly ₹88,000. If your company caps PF at ₹1,800 a month (many do), it is closer to ₹96,000.
Under the new tax regime, salaried people with taxable income up to ₹12.75 lakh (after the ₹75,000 standard deduction) pay no income tax, so at this level PF and professional tax are the main deductions.
