94% of Indian job seekers plan to use AI in their job search, according to LinkedIn research reported by PTI in January 2026. Most use it for resumes. Far fewer use it for the bigger question: what should I do next?
AI can be a surprisingly good career sounding board, if you ask it the right way. Here's what it does well, prompts you can try, and where you still need people.
What AI career guidance is good at
- Explaining roles. What does a data engineer do all day, versus a data analyst?
- Mapping skill gaps. Paste a job description and your resume and ask what's missing.
- Building a learning plan for the next 8–12 weeks.
- Interview practice, including follow-up questions.
- Thinking through decisions, like two offers or a services-to-product move.
Prompts you can use
| Goal | Try this prompt |
|---|---|
| Choose a direction | "I'm a mechanical engineer with 2 years in quality control in Chennai. List 4 realistic career paths with the skills each needs and typical salaries in India." |
| Find gaps | "Here's a job description and my resume. What are the top 5 gaps, and how would I show each in a project?" |
| Plan learning | "Give me a 10-week plan to move from manual to automation testing, 1 hour a day." |
| Practise | "Interview me for a junior product analyst role. Ask one question at a time and critique my answers." |
| Decide | "Compare these two offers on growth, stability and pay: (details)." |
Where AI falls short
- Salary and market data can be out of date. Check real numbers on Weekday's company salary pages.
- It doesn't know your local market or which teams are actually hiring.
- It can sound confident and still be wrong. Verify anything important.
- It can't vouch for you. Doors open through people.
Combine AI with people
Use AI to prepare good questions, then take them to someone who has done the job. Our guides on finding a mentor and networking help with that step.
AI connector tools are also trying to bridge this gap by introducing you to people in your domain. Read about them in AI networking for job seekers.

- Talk to one person in each of your top two options.
- Close one skill gap with a small, showable project.
- Start applying. Day can do the searching and applying for you.
