| CV (Curriculum Vitae) | Resume | Biodata | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 2+ pages (academic CVs can run 5–10) | 1–2 pages | 1–2 pages |
| Focus | Full career history and achievements | What's relevant to this job | Personal details |
| Includes | Education, research, publications, awards, talks, grants | Summary, skills, experience, education | Date of birth, religion, family, height, photo |
| Tailored per job? | Mostly the same | Yes, every time | No |
| Order | Chronological | Most relevant first | Personal first |
| Used for | Academia, research, medicine, UK/EU jobs | Most private-sector jobs in India and the US | Older government forms, matrimonial use |
Rule of thumb: if an Indian startup, IT company or MNC asks for your "CV", send your 1–2 page resume. If a university, research lab, fellowship or a European employer asks, send a proper CV.

The 3 CV formats
| Format | How it's organised | Best for | Avoid if |
|---|---|---|---|

| Combination (hybrid) | Skills summary on top, then chronological history | Experienced people with varied roles | You're a fresher with little to group |

What not to put on a CV for Indian company jobs
- Date of birth, religion, caste, marital status, father's name (not needed, and can invite bias).
- A photo, unless the employer asks.
- "Declaration: I hereby declare…" at the bottom. It's outdated and wastes space.
- Salary expectations. Save them for the conversation.
- Hobbies with no link to the job.

CV file name, format and email: the small things that get you rejected
- File name: FirstName_LastName_Role_CV.pdf (for example Ananya_Iyer_Data_Analyst_CV.pdf). Never 'CV final final (2).docx'.
- Format: PDF keeps your layout intact. Send a .docx only if the job post asks for Word.
- Fonts: Calibri, Arial or Garamond at 10.5–12 pt. Fancy fonts break in applicant tracking systems.
- Photo: skip it for India IT, US, UK and Canada roles. Add one for Gulf, Germany and some government applications if asked.
- Email ID: firstname.lastname@gmail.com. Avoid nicknames and birth years.
- Links: LinkedIn, GitHub, Behance or a portfolio, as clickable links with no tracking parameters.
