Resume for Freshers: Format, Sample and What Recruiters Check

resume for freshers — the short answer

a good resume for freshers is one page long and follows this order: header, short summary, education, skills, projects, internships, then certifications and achievements. use a simple single-column layout, standard headings, and a PDF file. put your best proof (projects and internships) in the top half, because that's where recruiters look first.

that's the format. the hard part is filling it when you have no work experience. this guide shows you what to write in every section, with weak vs strong examples, a full sample resume, stream-wise tips, and the mistakes that get fresher resumes rejected.

why most fresher resumes get ignored

freshers are being hired. the problem is competition. a TeamLease EdTech survey of 1,097 employers found that 75% plan to hire freshers in July–December 2026. their own summary of the shift: it's "less about how many freshers get hired, and more about which freshers get hired."

and you don't get much time to prove you're one of them. in a 2018 eye-tracking study by Ladders, recruiters spent an average of 7.4 seconds on a first look at a resume. the resumes that did well had simple layouts, clear section headings and bulleted results. the ones that failed had clutter, multiple columns and long sentences.

so your resume has one job: in about 7 seconds, show that you can do the work. most fresher resumes fail because they do this:

what freshers put firstwhat recruiters want first
"to work in a challenging environment that utilises my skills…"the role you want and your strongest proof, in two lines
father's name, date of birth, marital statusname, phone, email, LinkedIn, GitHub or portfolio
"MS Office, hardworking, team player"tools and skills that match the job description
a list of college subjectsprojects with what you built and what happened

which resume format is best for freshers?

there are three standard formats. here's how they compare for someone with no full-time experience:

formathow it worksgood for freshers?
reverse-chronologicallatest education and experience firstyes. it's familiar to recruiters and easy for ATS software to read.
functionalgroups by skills and hides the timelineno. recruiters often read it as "hiding something", and ATS tools struggle with it.
hybrid (combination)a strong skills and projects block, then a reverse-chronological timelinebest for most freshers. your projects get the spotlight and the timeline stays clear.

our pick: hybrid, on one page, in a single column. that means header → summary → education → skills → projects → internships → certifications and achievements.

one exception: if you have a strong internship (3+ months at a known company), move it above projects.

what to write in each section (with examples)

1. header — keep it to contact details

include your name, city, phone, a professional email, LinkedIn, and GitHub or portfolio if you have one.

remove: photo, date of birth, father's name, marital status, religion, full home address and the "declaration" line at the bottom. this "biodata" habit is still common in india, but private companies don't need any of it. it only takes space from your skills.

weak: coolguy_rahul99@gmail.com
strong: rahul.verma.dev@gmail.com

2. summary — two lines, not a paragraph

the old "career objective" talks about what you want. a summary talks about what you offer. say three things: who you are, your strongest skill or proof, and the role you're targeting.

weak: "seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation where I can utilise my skills for the growth of the company."

strong: "computer science graduate (2026) who built a full-stack expense tracker used by 300+ students. skilled in java, spring boot and react. looking for a backend developer role."

more examples by stream are in our guide to resume objectives for every engineering stream.

3. education — the most important section for freshers

list your degree, college, graduation year and CGPA. add 12th and 10th marks only if they're strong or if the job post (especially campus drives and mass recruiters) asks for them.

  • CGPA above 7.5: show it.
  • CGPA below 7: leave it out unless the application requires it, and let your projects do the talking.
  • relevant coursework: one line, only courses that match the job (for example: DBMS, operating systems, computer networks).

still unsure? read when to include your GPA on a resume.

4. skills — group them, match the job post

don't dump 25 skills in one line. group them and only list what you can answer questions about.

languages: java, python, sql
frameworks: spring boot, react
tools: git, postman, mysql, docker (basics)

skip: skill rating bars ("java ★★★★☆"), "MS Office" (unless it's a non-tech role) and soft skills listed as single words. "team player" means nothing on its own. show teamwork through a project instead.

5. projects — your work experience, for now

this is where freshers win or lose. use this formula for every bullet:

what you built + tech used + a result or number

weak: "made a library management system using java."

strong: "built a library management app in java and mysql with login, book search and fine calculation. cut manual entry time for our college library from 2 days to 2 hours a week."

list 2–3 projects, each with 2–3 bullets and a GitHub or live link. one real project that people used beats five tutorial clones. no numbers yet? our guide on how to quantify achievements shows you how to find them.

6. internships, freelance work and college roles

any real responsibility counts. that includes internships, freelance gigs, running a college fest, a TA role or a club lead position. write them like jobs.

weak: "member of the technical club."

strong: "led a 6-person team to build the registration site for our college tech fest. it handled 2,400 sign-ups in 3 weeks."

7. certifications and achievements — keep only what's relevant

add certifications that match the role (AWS, Google, NPTEL with a good score, HackerRank skill badges). add achievements with a rank or number: "top 5% in Smart India Hackathon internal round" or "500+ problems solved on LeetCode". skip participation certificates.

quick shortcut: you don't have to format all of this by hand. weekday's free resume builder gives you a clean, ATS-friendly layout. you just fill in the sections above.

resume tips by stream

the format above works for every degree. what changes is what you put in the spotlight:

streamlead withexample bullet
B.Tech / BE (CS, IT)projects, GitHub, internships, coding profiles"built a REST API used by 3 college clubs for event sign-ups"
B.Tech (mech, civil, ECE)core projects, software tools (AutoCAD, MATLAB), industrial training"designed a gearbox model in SolidWorks; reduced part count by 15%"
B.Com / BBAExcel, Tally or accounting tools, internships, case competitions"reconciled 1,200 entries in Tally during a 2-month CA firm internship"
MBAsummer internship outcomes, live projects, numbers"recommended a pricing change that a 40-store retail chain piloted"
B.Sc / BCAtechnical projects, certifications, data skills"analysed 10,000 rows of sales data in Python and presented 3 insights"
BA / artswriting samples, research, campaigns, languages"wrote 20 blog posts for a startup; top post got 8,000 reads"

the stream matters because employers rate degrees differently. the India Skills Report 2026 puts overall graduate employability at 56.35%. it's about 80% for computer science and IT engineers, 72.76% for MBA, 62.81% for commerce and 55.55% for arts. if your stream sits lower, your resume has to work harder with projects and proof.

make sure ATS software can read your resume

many companies run resumes through an applicant tracking system (ATS) before a human sees them. if the software can't read yours, the recruiter may never see it. keep it safe:

  • single column. two-column templates often get read in the wrong order.
  • standard headings. write "education", "skills", "projects". don't write "my journey" or "what I bring".
  • no text in images, icons or text boxes. the software skips them.
  • use words from the job post. if it says "REST APIs", write "REST APIs", not just "backend".
  • PDF, unless the portal asks for Word. PDF keeps your layout fixed.
  • sensible file name. Priya_Sharma_Backend_Resume.pdf, not resume_final_v3 (2).pdf.

not sure if yours passes? upload it to weekday's free ATS resume checker and pick the role you're applying for. it scores your keywords, formatting and structure, so you can see what to fix.

fresher resume mistakes (and the fix)

mistakewhy it hurtsfix
two or three pagesa fresher doesn't have two pages of proof, so it reads as paddingone page. see when two pages is okay
same resume for every jobit misses the keywords each job post asks forchange the summary and the order of your skills for each role
listing skills you can't explainthe interviewer picks one and asks deep questionslist only what you could talk about for 5 minutes
tutorial projects only"to-do app" and "weather app" are on thousands of resumesadd one project that solves a real problem, even a small one
typos and mixed fontslooks careless in a 7-second scanone font, 10–12 pt, and read it aloud once before sending
broken or private GitHub linksthe recruiter clicks and gets a 404open every link in an incognito window
lying about skills or marksbackground checks and technical rounds catch itbe honest. write "basics" or "familiar with" where it's true

your fresher resume checklist

  • one page, single column, PDF
  • a professional email, plus LinkedIn and GitHub or portfolio links that work
  • a two-line summary naming the role you want
  • education with CGPA (if 7.5+) and graduation year
  • skills grouped, and each one something you can explain
  • 2–3 projects, each with tech used and one number
  • internships or college roles written like jobs
  • no photo, date of birth, father's name or declaration
  • keywords from the job post in your skills and projects
  • an ATS score checked before you apply

faqs about resumes for freshers

should a fresher resume be one page?

yes. one page is enough for almost every fresher. if it's spilling over, cut weak lines like hobbies, school-level achievements and generic skills before you shrink the font.

should I add a photo to my resume?

for private companies in india, no. it takes space and isn't needed. add one only if the job post asks for it (some government, airline and front-office roles do).

should I write a career objective or a summary?

a summary. write two lines about what you offer and the role you want. a generic "seeking a challenging position" objective adds nothing.

do I need to add 10th and 12th marks?

add them if they're strong, or if the company or campus drive asks. many mass recruiters have a percentage cutoff, so check the job post. otherwise your degree is enough.

what's the difference between a resume, a CV and a biodata?

a resume is a 1–2 page summary for jobs. a CV is longer and covers your full academic history, so it's used for research and academic roles (in india the two words are often used interchangeably). a biodata lists personal details like age, religion and family, and isn't what private employers want.

can I make a good resume on my phone?

yes. use a builder with a fixed template, then download it as a PDF. here's our guide to building a resume on your phone.

your resume is ready. now put it to work

a good resume only helps once it reaches the right companies. upload it to weekday and get matched with companies hiring freshers for your skills, instead of sending 200 applications into the void. looking for remote work? here are work from home jobs for freshers that are actually real.
