How recruiters search (and why it matters)
A recruiter hiring a data analyst in Pune typically types something like "data analyst" AND SQL AND ("Power BI" OR Tableau) and filters by location. If your headline says "Numbers person | Curious mind", you won't match even if your experience is perfect. Use the exact title and spellings they'd type: "Power BI", not "PBI"; "JavaScript", not "JS".
| Recruiter filter | Put this in your headline |
|---|---|
| Job title | The title you want, as companies write it |
| Skills | 2–4 of the most-requested skills from JDs you like |
| Location | City, if you're targeting one (also set it in your profile) |
| Availability | "Immediate joiner" or a date, if true |
| Seniority | Years of experience or level (SDE II, Senior, Lead) |
Same person, two headlines
Rahul Verma · 2nd Data Analyst | SQL · Power BI · Python | Cut reporting time 60% Bengaluru · Open to work vs Rahul Verma · 2nd MIS Executive at ShopKart Retail Pvt Ltd Bengaluru
Write yours in 5 minutes
- Open 3 job descriptions you'd love to get.
- Copy the job title they share.
- Circle the 3 skills that appear in all three, and that you have.
- Pick your best number (users, ₹, %, time saved) or your goal.
- Assemble: Title | Skill · Skill · Skill | Number or goal. Read it on your phone; trim anything past the first line that isn't pulling weight.
Next: turn on Open to Work with the same titles, and complete the rest of your profile.
FAQs
What is a good LinkedIn headline for a fresher?
Target role, 2–3 key skills and what you want, e.g. 'Aspiring Data Analyst | SQL · Excel · Power BI | Open to roles in Pune'.
How long can a LinkedIn headline be?
Up to 220 characters. Put the most important words in the first 60 or so, because that part shows in search results and comments.
What should I write in my LinkedIn headline?
Use Role | Skills | Proof or goal. Include the job title recruiters search for and the skills from job descriptions you want.
Should I write 'Open to work' in my headline?
You can, but the Open to Work feature does it better. Use the headline for role and skills; add 'immediate joiner' if that's true.
Should I include my company name?
If it's a strong brand, yes, after your role and skills. Role and skills matter more for search.
Can I use emojis in my LinkedIn headline?
One is fine. Several can look unprofessional and add nothing to search.
What headline should a career switcher use?
Use an arrow: 'Old role → New role | New skills | Proof', e.g. 'Support → Data Analyst | SQL · Power BI | Google certified'.
What if I'm unemployed?
Use your target role and skills, then 'Available immediately' or 'Open to roles in X'. Avoid the word 'unemployed'.
How often should I change my headline?
Whenever your target role changes, or every few months to match new job descriptions. Turn off 'share profile updates' if you don't want to notify your network.
