It should state your job title, CTC with a salary breakup, joining date, location, probation, notice period, benefits and conditions, plus a deadline to accept. Before signing, check fixed vs variable pay, in-hand salary, bonds, notice period and any non-compete clause.

Negotiate

Dear Anita,

Thank you for the offer. I'm excited about the role. Based on my experience with automated reporting and the market range for this position, I was hoping for a fixed CTC closer to ₹10 lakh. Is there any flexibility on the fixed component?

How companies usually send offers in India

  • Startups: an emailed PDF or a DocuSign link, often within 24–72 hours of the final round. Usually asks for acceptance in 2–5 days.
  • IT services (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, etc.): through their candidate portal, often weeks after campus selection, with a separate joining letter later.
  • MNCs and GCCs: a verbal offer from the recruiter first, then a written offer after approval, usually with background verification by a third party.
  • Government/PSU: an appointment order after document verification and medical, not a CTC-style offer.

FAQs

What should an offer letter contain?

Job title, CTC with salary breakup, joining date, location, probation, notice period, benefits, conditions and an acceptance deadline.

Is an offer letter legally binding in India?

Once both sides sign, it's generally treated as a contract on its terms. The appointment letter usually sets out the full terms.

What is the difference between CTC and in-hand salary?

CTC includes employer PF, gratuity provision and variable pay. In-hand is what's paid monthly after employee PF, professional tax and income tax.

Are service bonds legal in India?

Courts have generally upheld reasonable bonds tied to real costs like training, but not penalties that are excessive.

Is a non-compete clause enforceable in India?

Post-employment non-competes are generally void under Section 27 of the Indian Contract Act. Confidentiality and reasonable non-solicit clauses can be enforced.

Can a company withdraw an offer letter?

It happens, especially before joining. Don't resign until you have a signed offer, and keep all communication in writing.

How do I accept an offer letter?

Sign and return it by the deadline and send a short email confirming role, CTC and joining date.

How do I spot a fake offer letter?

Watch for requests for money, non-company email addresses, no real interview and salaries far above market.

What is a letter of intent?

An early, usually non-binding letter showing a company intends to hire you, before the formal offer.

What is a good variable pay percentage?

Many roles have 10–20% variable. Ask what percentage of variable has actually been paid out in recent years.
